How to Choose the Right Med Spa (7 Questions to Ask)

Med spas have multiplied faster than regulation has kept up with, which means the gap between the best and the worst is enormous, and often invisible from a website or Instagram feed alone. Before you book anywhere, including with us, these are the questions worth asking.

1. Who actually performs the injections?

In many states, aestheticians without medical licensure are legally barred from injecting, yet enforcement varies widely. Ask directly whether your injector is a physician, nurse practitioner, physician assistant, or registered nurse, and how many years of injecting experience they have.

2. Is there a medical director, and are they actually involved?

Most states require a supervising physician for medical spas, but "on paper" supervision and active involvement are very different things. Ask how often the medical director is on-site and whether they personally review treatment plans.

3. What happens if there's a complication?

Reputable practices have a clear, rehearsed protocol for handling rare complications like vascular occlusion, and can explain it to you without hesitation. Hesitation or vague answers here are a real warning sign.

4. Do they push products and upsells during your visit?

A rushed consultation that pivots quickly to "you should also do this" is a sign of a sales-driven model, not a medical one. The best providers spend more time asking questions than making recommendations in your first fifteen minutes.

5. What products and devices do they actually use?

Ask by name. Reputable practices use FDA-cleared devices and well-known filler and neuromodulator brands, and will tell you exactly what's in the syringe or on the label without deflecting.

6. Can you see real before-and-after photos of their own clients?

Stock photography and heavily filtered "results" are common on med spa marketing. Ask to see unfiltered photos of the specific provider's actual work, not a manufacturer's marketing library.

7. How do they handle your first visit?

An unhurried consultation, a full medical history review, and a written treatment plan before anything touches your skin are the baseline, not a bonus. If your first appointment feels rushed, that's usually a preview of how future visits will go too.
